Welcome to Australia and to Perth!
Australia Australia has a well-earned reputation for staging memorable and creative events. Our proximity to the Asia Pacific Region combined with our accessibility from Europe, Africa and the Americas will foster a vibrant conference and an event long remembered by attendees. It is also an extremely popular destination for overseas people to visit. For example, according to the Harris Poll, for the ninth year in a row, Australia has been named as the country where the most Americans would like to holiday. Likewise, Europeans rated Australia the second most desired destination to visit. Therefore, hosting an international conference in Perth provides a very desirable location for the delegates to visit and further ensures a successful event. Excellent exchange rates and a low cost of living (i.e. low ground costs) also make Australia a highly attractive destination, particularly for European and American visitors. Australia has superb weather and many stunning tourist attractions, as indeed does Western Australia. The local language is English, and a very stable political climate exists making it a safe and attractive destination. Perth The City of Perth is focused on the central business district and surrounding inner city residential areas. It is the State's centre for the arts, business, government and entertainment. Cosmopolitan Perth is renowned for its fresh, clean and unpolluted environment and it's equable Mediterranean climate cultivates a relaxed outdoor lifestyle. Nestled in a picturesque natural amphitheatre, bordered by Kings Park botanical gardens and the beautiful Swan River, visitors find the city to be clean, well laid out and easy to navigate. Above all else, it is the people of Perth and Western Australia who are our greatest asset. Perth was voted the "World's Friendliest City" by readers of the US Leisure and Travel Magazine in 2002 - an accolade that confirms what visitors to Western Australia have said for many years. Materialisation figures show that many conferences held in Perth attract a bigger than usual registration. For example, the International Federation of Manipulative Physiotherapists (IFOMPT) conference in Perth attracted 1,050 delegates when the original expectation was for 350 registrations. More recently, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists held its 2006 International Conference and Exhibition in Perth. Over 2,600 delegates were present, breaking attendance figures of 2,200 from Rio de Janeiro which had stood since 1998. Perth has Australia's fastest growing economy and is recognized as Australia's premier mineral and petroleum state. Perth is also considered one of the most exciting, vibrant, forward thinking cities in the Asia Pacific Region. It is a city that breeds innovative thinkers with a "can do" attitude to business. This same attitude applies to the meetings sector where industry and suppliers co-operate to ensure every event is successful. The world has definitely come to Western Australia thanks in no small part to extensive air links, low-fare domestic air services, and bigger more efficient aircraft speeding travelers to this part of the globe. With over 24,000 beds in the Perth area, and world class meeting and exhibition capacities, Perth is the natural place for SPWLA to meet in 2010. Some useful links to assist you with the preparation of your visit have been placed at the bottom of this page. Security Perth offers a level of confidence that can only be achieved in small or medium sized cities. Crime rates are comparatively low and the political situation is very stable. The local people are extremely friendly and accommodating to tourists. Climate Perth enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with warm to hot dry summers and mild winters. As Australia’s sunniest capital city, Perth enjoys an average of eight hours sunshine a day. Perth’s warm sunny climate and our unpolluted environment make it perfect for sporting and leisure activities – everything from tennis, golf and cricket through to whale watching and sailing. The following are provided for your convenience and without commitment. SPWLA and FESAus have no affiliation with any of these, but we think that you may find them informative and helpful in preparing your visit.
